Este seria o primeiro disco com Portnoy na programação desde "Black Clouds & Silver Linings" de 2009.
“DT16 está oficialmente em andamento”, dizia a descrição da postagem recém-compartilhada no Instagram. Obviamente, esta é a referência ao 16º disco. O último com Portnoy foi o décimo álbum da banda, “Black Clouds & Silver Linings”, de 2009, então isso é algo enorme para o mundo progressivo e para o Dream Theater.
“É muito cedo para dizer”, Mike Portnoy respondeu a um fã quando questionado sobre se haveria músicas do Mangini em seu set do ano passado. “Quando deixei a banda, há 13 anos, era eu quem escrevia o setlist e coisas assim. Então, nem discutimos qual será a nova dinâmica.”
“Estou aberto a isso, é claro, então certamente faria isso se fosse isso que eles quisessem. Mas definitivamente será uma dinâmica diferente.”
“Acho que quando saí, anos atrás, eu estava comandando muitas coisas, e acho que agora eles se acostumaram tanto a trabalhar mais como uma banda coletiva que acho que é uma dinâmica muito diferente agora que vou tenho que encontrar meu lugar e sem pisar no calo de ninguém."

Now that drummer Mike Portnoy is back in Dream Theater, the legendary prog metal pioneers will be releasing a new album with their classic lineup in the foreseeable future. With Portnoy returning to the lineup in October 2023, the band revealed that they'll soon be going into the studio to do a new album soon. That moment has come as the prog legends have shared a social media post revealing that they're already in the studio making this happen.
"DT16 is officially underway," the description of the newly shared Instagram post read. Obviously, this is the reference to the 16th record. The last one with Portnoy was the band's 10th album, 2009's "Black Clouds & Silver Linings," so that's a huge thing for the prog world and Dream Theater.
Obviously, Portnoy's return meant the automatic dismissal of Mike Mangini. So, what's going to happen with the Mangini-era material? Will Dream Theater play that stuff live?
"It's too soon to tell," Mike Portnoy replied to a fan when asked about whether there'll be Mangini songs in their set last year. "When I left the band 13 years ago, I was the one writing the setlist and things like that. So, we haven't even discussed what the new dynamic is gonna be."
"I'm open to it, of course, so I surely would do it if that's what they wanna do. But it's definitely gonna be a different dynamic."
"I think when I left all those years ago, I was running a lot of stuff, and I think now they've gotten so used to working more as a collective band that I think it's a very different dynamic now that I'm gonna have to find my place in and without stepping on anybody's toes."
"I have to respect that they've been doing it all this time without me. So, whatever they wanna do, I'm up for it. But that being said, there is so much music of ours to come back and play that…"
"Personally, I look forward to revisiting all that stuff, but if they wanna do the newer stuff as well, whatever they want is fine with me."
